What is Sculptra? How is it different than other fillers?

Sculptra is an innovative type of filler that works with your body by ‘stimulating’ collagen which causes your body to create new collagen for a volumizing effect. Other dermal fillers are made from a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, which is most often used to hydrate the skin. Sculptra is made up of  which is a bio-stimulatory dermal filler, used for dissolvable stitches for many years, and works with your skin to build collagen. Poly-L-lactic acid works over time and does not have immediate results; It takes a few weeks to a few months to ‘activate’ and is great for subtle, natural looking results. Microscopic Sculptra crystals induce a mild inflammatory reaction under the skin which ultimately is what causes the skin to create collagen.

Who is a good candidate?

Almost anyone can benefit from using Sculptra! If you want to add volume and fill in those difficult-to-treat wrinkles and folds with natural looking results, this would be a great option for you. You should not use Sculptra if you are allergic to the product, if you are experiencing an inflammation or an injection in the area. Sculptra should be avoided if you are prone to keloid scarring.

What can I expect for this treatment?

Treatment protocols are similar to other filler treatments, like Juvederm and Restylane. The treating area is numbed using topical anesthetic for about 20-30 minutes beforehand to avoid any discomfort. Our nurse will inject and feather the product throughout the treated area to disperse the product evenly. The treated area is massaged briefly afterwards to help with product dispersion and activation. Soon after, tiny microspheres in the product simulate or ‘irritate’ the skin which increases fibroblastic activity. In short, Sculptra helps your body build collagen. You should experience little to no side effects when using Sculptra but it is possible to experience slight swelling and bruising for a couple of days. Results for Sculptra last 2 to 5 years.

What can I expect post treatment?

It is important to be patient when using Sculptra. You will definitely see an increase in volume because of water retention but usually subsides after a few days. It may take a few weeks to a couple of months for the product to start building collagen and be noticeable to you. It is completely normal to feel sore in the area for a few days afterwards. It is extremely important to follow the 5-5-5 rule; massage the area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days to avoid any collagen bumps and to help disperse the product. Collagen bumps are hard to get rid of after they appear.
